London Fire Service To Stop Attending Automatic Fire Alarms in Commercial Premises

Carly Louise Lee

Starting from October 2024, The London Fire Brigade will stop attending automatic fire alarms in most commercial buildings between 7am & 8:30pm unless we receive a call reporting a fire.

This policy won't apply to all buildings. Schools, residential buildings, and many other types of buildings are exempt, and London Fire Brigade will continue to respond to automatic fire alarms.

Did you know?

In 2023/24 Automatic Fire Alarms made up 40 per cent of all London Fire Brigade incidents attended – 52,000 calls. Less than one per cent of calls from non-residential Automatic Fire Alarms are ultimately recorded as fires – the 99 per cent majority are false alarms.

AXA Commercial is advising businesses to update fire risk assessments and staff training to adapt to this crucial change.

  • Staff must be trained and instructed to call 999 when a fire is confirmed.

  • Fire alarm systems should be maintained to reduce the number of false alarms

  • Fire Risk Assessments should be reviewed
